7 Aug 2002 - St. Jean sur-Richelieu Quebec to Plattsburgh, NY

Wednesday Rupa and I took our turn driving the van.  We headed South and crossed the border into Vermont on a beautiful sunny day.  We took a detour around isle La Motte and visited the St Anne Shrine.

The terrain was basically flat but the road was good and offered beautiful lake views much of the way.

Toward the end of the day we took a ferry to cross into Plattsburgh.  In the evening we got Chinese food at a buffet place (in and out in about 40 min, in sharp contrast with the French restaurant).  After dinner we walked around the grounds of SUNY Plattsburgh, a college with a large collection of unique outdoor sculptures; see the "tornado" picture.  Looked like the Art majors had run amok, but some were really interesting.

8 Aug 2002 - Plattsburgh NY to Lake Placid

Thursday was advertised as a day with the most climbing, but started out with some long flat sections heading South of town.  Some of us took a detour to see the Ausable Chasm, which is a fairly deep river valley with waterfalls and unique rock formations.  After this we turned West and started climbing.  Another beautiful sunny day, with nearly deserted country roads, and we had a great time.  The hills were substantial but never overwhelming, with plenty of great views as we entered the Adirondack mountains.  A couple more hours of gradual uphill and we entered Lake Placid.
